Bacha, Haydna, Pergolesiego i Mozarta.

On 6 November, harmonia mundi will release an album that may well prove to be one of the more compelling recordings in the run-up to the Beethoven Year. Under the direction of Riccardo Minasi, Ensemble Resonanz turns to Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 in E-flat major, Op. 55, seeking to hear the Eroica afresh, beyond the weight of a performance tradition that, over more than two centuries, has inevitably tempered something of its original ferocity.
At the heart of this interpretation lies a deceptively simple question: can a work so thoroughly familiar still unsettle us, take us by surprise and disturb our sense of equilibrium? Minasi and the musicians of Ensemble Resonanz return to the score, early sources and the insights of historically informed performance practice, yet without attempting to reconstruct some hypothetical “authentic” Beethoven. Performing on modern instruments, they draw on historical awareness primarily as a means of reconsidering articulation, dynamics, tempo and formal proportions.
Their attention is drawn to precisely those qualities that centuries of performance tradition may have gradually smoothed away: fractures within the form, violent contrasts, abrupt shifts of tension, the physical energy of the rhythm and the music’s relentless forward momentum. Rather than monumentalising the Eroica, they seek to restore its unpredictability. This is Beethoven not contemplated through the glass of a museum display case, but once again exposed to the risks inherent in performance.
The album also marks another stage in the long-standing collaboration between Ensemble Resonanz and Riccardo Minasi. Their work together over the years has allowed them to develop a musical language in which historical knowledge meets the freedom and responsiveness of a modern ensemble, and in which the search for a distinctive sound does not end with elegance and precision, but at times pushes the players towards the limits of what their instruments, and they themselves, can achieve. For harmonia mundi, the recording continues Ensemble Resonanz’s discographic journey with the label, following earlier explorations of music by C. P. E. Bach, Haydn, Pergolesi and Mozart.
Ensemble Resonanz and Riccardo Minasi’s Eroica will be released by harmonia mundi on 6 November 2026. The recording promises to be intriguing enough that we certainly do not intend to leave it at this brief preview. A full review will appear soon in W Kulturalny Sposób.
